Tattooing
Tattooing is the process of inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to make a permanent mark, pattern or design on the skin. It also includes cosmetic tattooing and applying semi-permanent make-up.
Tattooing is a higher risk personal appearance service – it involves piercing the skin, and therefore a higher potential risk of infection.
You should make an informed choice about getting a tattoo and where you get it done. Things to consider include:
- is the studio licensed and is the operator qualified?
- infection control practices at the studio—contaminated equipment, unclean premises, unsafe procedures and a lack of infection control knowledge may potentially contribute to the spread of blood-borne disease such as hepatitis C, hepatitis B, HIV (the virus that can lead to AIDS) and a range of bacterial infections.
- possible reactions—people with auto immune conditions or cancer should be very wary about skin piercing and should consult a doctor. You can also ask your tattooist for a skin test before you start to make sure you are not allergic to the inks they plan to use.
- you need to be 18 before you can get a tattoo.
